Although each of these industries is vastly different, they all have one thing in common: they are dependent on large scale computer networks, often called Industrial Control Systems (ICS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Process Control Systems (PCS), or Distributed Control Systems (DCS), to monitor, control, and safeguard their industrial operations.
In the past, these systems were often based on proprietary software and typically isolated from fast evolving business networks. However, today’s digitally connected world requires industrial organizations to open these once isolated computer systems to IT / business networks in order to reduce costs of global operations, optimize digital transactions and remain competitive. This increasing connectivity, although extremely beneficial in terms of costs and efficiency, brings inherent security risks unique to industrial control systems that must be properly managed. From the rapid deployment of IP-converged systems to reduce costs and increase automation, to the adoption of emerging technologies such as Advanced Metering and Smart Grid infrastructure to improve energy efficiency, industrial organizations are simply not prepared to assess, mitigate and manage this increased cyber exposure. Left undetected or improperly remediated, vulnerabilities in these systems can significantly jeopardize the reliability and integrity of our global critical infrastructure, resulting in millions of dollars in economic losses and serious national security and public safety risks.
In order to address this issue, a small team of internationally-recognized cyber security experts and industrial automation engineers founded Wurldtech in 2007 and set out to create a suite of solutions specifically to help industrial stakeholders better identify and mitigate cyber security vulnerabilities in critical infrastructures.
