  • An Operator’s Guide to Requiring Achilles Certified Devices

Achilles Certification is a simple and effective method for an operator to improve their cyber security posture. By acquiring devices that have earned Achilles Certification, operators will be employing devices that have demonstrated a high level of network robustness, thereby increasing their cyber security and reducing the risk of unplanned downtime. However, although operators may know the benefits of certification, it is not up to them to get their devices certified; it is ultimately the device vendor’s decision whether or not to pursue certification. While the operator may not have the final say, the following approaches can be employed to ...

  • An Introduction to Achilles Certification for Host-Based Devices

As I mentioned in an earlier post, in the weeks to come I will be describing the expansion of the Achilles Certification program. Let’s start this discussion today by talking about host-based device (HBD) certification. A host-based device is “a general purpose device running a general purpose operating system (eg Windows OS, Linux) capable of hosting one or more applications, data stores or functions.” An HBD is what the control engineer uses to interface with the DCS or SIS system (an embedded device in Wurldtech’s device taxonomy). • Latest Version of Triconex Trident is Achilles Certified

We are pleased to announce the latest device to achieve Achilles Certification, Invensys Process System’s (IPS) Triconex Trident 2.1.0. What is notable about this latest certification is that this is the second time the Trident has received certification, as the Trident 2.0.1 was certified last year. The certification of a new version of a previously-certified device is an important step for our program, as it reinforces the notion that device robustness must continually be verified and that Achilles Certification is strictly tied to a device version. Let’s take a closer look at the implications of this extension for both vendors ...

  • A Trifecta Of Rational Cyber Security Discourse

In this months issue of Automation World, three articles touched on various elements of the industrial cyber security paradigm which we think are extremely important. I have briefly summarized each below and attached a link for your viewing pleasure. First, Ted Angevaare, internationally-recognized industrial cyber security expert from Shell - and a strong supporter of Wurldtech - is profiled in an article regarding their recent cyber security initiatives. This is the first time a major end-user has publicly come forward with their pains and plans around cyber security. A refreshing and welcome perspective indeed. Just think about the progress we ...
