In this months issue of Automation World, three articles touched on various elements of the industrial cyber security paradigm which we think are extremely important. I have briefly summarized each below and attached a link for your viewing pleasure.
First, Ted Angevaare, internationally-recognized industrial cyber security expert from Shell - and a strong supporter of Wurldtech - is profiled in an article regarding their recent cyber security initiatives. This is the first time a major end-user has publicly come forward with their pains and plans around cyber security. A refreshing and welcome perspective indeed. Just think about the progress we can make if more critical infrastructure operators would do the same.
Article 1: Under Watchful Eyes
The second article deals with the topic of Smart Grid security and touches on some of the major pain points from the perspective of the electric utilities. With the mainstream media covering this topic primarily by perpetuating unsubstantiated fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD), its nice to see the issue articulated by automation stakeholders who 1) truly understand the problem, 2) can put it into the context of industrial process operations, and 3) are the ones who actually bear the responsibility to fix it - gradually moving our industry from “anecdotes” to “action”
Article 2: Cyber Security - A Must For The Grid
The last article of interest continues the dialogue around safety and security. Again, another tempered and rational discussion from the industry experts on an extremely important topic. We all know the benefits of converging the two interrelated and synergistic topics, now the challenge is to introduce a strong business model, product portfolio and implementation strategy to facilitate the adoption by those that matter - the customers.
Article 3: Safety & Security Follow Parallel Paths
